Program Overview
On August 14, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti, leaving a death toll of over 2,000 and injuring over 12,000 individuals at its wake. At least 75,000 homes were damaged, affecting around 135,000 families. Haiti is obviously extremely close to our heart as W4W was largely founded during the response to the 2010 quake there. Search and rescue efforts are underway but have been held back by heavy rains brought about by Tropical Depression Grace.
We have had a permanent team in Haiti since 2010 and are well equipped to deploy them immediately, in light of the current disaster.
For the initial phase, we are reaching beyond our normal scope of work to help address all the immediate needs. Providing water is our first priority, but we have also decided to help with food, key hygiene items, tents, and transitional homes, to displaced families in 3 communities within ground zero.
