Fundraiser Overview

Puerto Rico has experienced the strongest Hurricane in 80 years. Some of the worst hit areas were those along the mountains (Naranjito, Corozal, Ciales, Manati, Arecibo) and some along the coast that experienced severe flooding. Because of this many have lost their homes and the waters are contaminated with dead fish, sewer and debris. Given the contaminants, bacteria and protozoa that exists in non potable water, potable water filters like Brita Filters will not work. Currently the Government is advising that individuals do not drink the tap water or water from any source before filtering it or boiling it. The latter is impossible for those who don't have electricity and an alternate means to boil a pot. In order to prevent water related disease Puerto Rico's citizens are in need of safe water to drink.

This posses a great challenge. The transportation of water to these areas has proven hard. Small churches, looking to provide water to the families in their community, are transporting waters from their central distribution centers to their town. The problem is that providing bottled water only means they will have to do it again next week. Spending time and energy that could be put towards other long lasting efforts.

Currently people both in the metro area and the island are visiting the stores every other day, forced to stand in line and hope that the store does not run out of water. They are limited to two cases per person and the supplies usually are running out by 9:30am. This crisis is complicated further by the fact that 84% of the island is still without power. This means that many have not been able to return to work and generate a pay check in 4 weeks, some since hurricane Irma. Therefore citizens are spending their scarce money resources in buying water when they could be spending them in food and in rebuilding their lives.

Help us with purchasing these units so that affected families in Ciales and Santurce can drink clean water, remain healthy and stop spending money and time buying bottled water. This units will filter up to 1 million gallons of water. For a family of 5 a case of water lasts 2 days (and that is generous because Puerto Rico is hot) and costs $5 dollars. In 20 days of buying cases of water one filter is paid. Eight bottles of water equal one gallon of water. With your gift of $50 they can drink 1 million gallons of water. Thats .00005 cents per gallon of water. Help us help them stay healthy, drink clean water and use their time and resources for other important rebuilding efforts. We have selected these two towns in coordination efforts with people we know and trust in Puerto Rico and through our partnering with Iglesias Discipulos de Cristo in Puerto Rico.

Neighborhoods surrounding Santurce flooded and the eye of the storm went over Ciales, destroying homes and causing the Toro Negro river to flood, destroying bridges and flooding homes up to the roof for three days. We will be visiting Barrio Obrero, Playita and Villa Palmera nearby Santurce, AND Dos Rios, La Grama and La Pesa in Ciales.

Our team will make its first trip on November 24th through the 27th and will visit both the areas of Santurce and Ciales to distribute both water filters and food.

Waves for Water is a 501C3 Charitable organization. All donations are tax deductible.

For more information about food efforts please email Jennisse Silvestri at jjsilvestri@gmail.com
