Project Overview

Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. In the Northwest zone of Haiti, more than 37% live in extreme poverty, and have no access to clean water. More than 75% of the population don’t have running water in their household.

The impact of this is huge. Haitians are at high risk of serious infectious illness including water borne bacterial and protozoal diarrhoea and water contact diseases, such as cholera. Consequently, the infant mortality rate is ten times that of Australia and ninety percent of Haiti’s children suffer from waterborne diseases and intestinal parasites.

Can you imagine having to give your child dirty water to drink, that you knew was likely contaminated with diseases and parasites, and that had made others sick, all because you have no other option?

Clearly, water quality interventions in North West Haiti would be one of the most effective methods to reduce the incidence of disease, and promote health and well being for Haitians, and that is the ultimate goal of this project.

What is this project going to do? Simply, the project aims to provide water filters to families and communities that don’t have access to clean water. In addition, I aim to provide along with the filters other interventions such as hygiene training and sanitation to deliver even better health outcomes.

The primary focus will be to distribute these filters to rural families with young children, and to schools, in order to maximise the impact of clean water. If the 100 water filter goal can be reached, between 1000 and 5000 people will benefit.

Why should you support me as the courier for this project? I am moving to St Louis du Nord to work with Northwest Haiti Christian Mission. I am a chemical engineer from Australia, aiming to establish myself as a Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) coordinator. I aim to employ a strong educational and evaluative component to this project, to ensure that the outcome is measurable. This in turn will ensure that the water filters reach those who need it most, that the benefits are being realised fully and to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the project, so that it can be modified, to improve the outcomes further.

Thankyou for considering a cause that will make a direct and measurable impact on the lives of those less fortunate.

For Australians donating to this cause please be aware that this site uses US dollars. Thank you for your generous support.
